In the catalogue accompanying the Sherman exhibition, Kathleen Brown writes: "Five contemporary Indigenous artists – Pincher Talunga, Regina Wilson, Theresa Lemon, Margaret Kundu and Mabel Jimarin – explore the elements of colour and design by drawing on the rich knowledge and unique skills of a tradition of basket weaving and the designs painted on cultural materials… Theresa Lemon explores a concept over a series of paintings. Through her own experimental style, rather than a direct transfer from material culture, Lemon is creating a whole new way of experiencing life and art. In this show she draws on the special colours and fine stitches of the weaving tradition. A black current berry, mimeli, is used to create blue-purple dye for weaving. An expansion of the intricate stitches made from pandanus fibre to the dimensions of canvas celebrates both the depth and precision of the weaving tradition and the emergence of a new visual expression."
