THE MODERN + CONTEMPORARY AUCTION Shapiro Auctioneers’ commitment to contemporary art commenced in 1999 with the landmark auction of The Malcolm Enright Collection. In 2001 we introduced the Modern + Contemporary auctions to ensure this stimulating direction for collectors was developed to its full potential. Encompassing Australian and international paintings, sculpture and photography, Aboriginal art and 20th Century Design, these auctions have a dedicated audience and have borne significant results, including a 1962 bronze sculpture by Henry Moore, which realised $486,000 in May 2002. ABORIGINAL ART Aboriginal art occupies a prominent position in the re-evaluation of contemporary art practice, continuing to visually and intellectually seduce curators and collectors worldwide. The unique combination of an art with a varied and dynamic aesthetic with living links to traditional spiritual practice has proved appealing to cultural institutions and private collectors alike. Shapiro Auctioneers’ access to exceptional works and global markets will continue the fervour amongst our collectors for acquiring this exciting art. 20th CENTURY DESIGN Shapiro Auctioneers established the auction market for 20th Century Design and continues to be at the forefront promoting progressive design in Australia. Discovering great examples of Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, Art Deco and Post War Design is one of our primary goals for collectors. In May 2002, we created a new Australian auction record in this market with the discovery and sale of a table designed by Josef Hoffmann for the Wiener Werkstätte to the New York Metropolitan Museum for $138,250.
